Future Farmers Explore Careers at RIST’s Agriculture Taster Day
“It was fantastic to see so many young people actively exploring careers in agriculture. Their enthusiasm, questions and willingness to get involved showed just how bright the future of our industry is. Days like this really do inspire the next generation of ag leaders.” – Helen Read, RIST.
On Monday 28 July, approximately forty Year 9 students from throughout the Glenelg Southern Grampians region attended the annual Careers in Agriculture Taster Day at RIST to gain hands-on experience and explore future career pathways in the agriculture industry..
The annual event, coordinated by GSGLLEN, featured practical, hands-on workshops and welcomed students from Baimbridge College, Monivae College, The Hamilton and Alexandra College, Good Shepherd College, and Heywood & District Secondary College.
Students rolled up their sleeves and rotated through a series of sessions exploring diverse career pathways across the agricultural industry.
Each session offered a real-world look at the tools, skills, and technologies shaping today’s agricultural careers.
Workshop rotations included shearing and wool handling, livestock handling, agronomy, agri-tech and an animal health autopsy with local vet Dr Lexie Leonard.
Workshop activities were crafted to give students an insight to how modern agriculture offers dynamic, future-focused career opportunities both on and off the farm.
Helen Read, Head of Student Experience at RIST, shared her reflections on the day:
“It was fantastic to see so many young people actively exploring careers in agriculture. Their enthusiasm, questions and willingness to get involved showed just how bright the future of our industry is. Days like this really do inspire the next generation of ag leaders.”
A huge thank you to our passionate trainers and facilitators and to the participating schools, students, and GSGLLEN for making the day a great success.
