RIST Takes Welding Students on Ultrabuild Site Visit

RIST, are-able and Ultrabuild recently joined forces to provide participants in the RIST Introduction to Welding short course with a unique opportunity to experience steel fabrication in the construction industry firsthand.

On Monday 6 July, four course participants visited Ultrabuild, where Steel Manager, Jayden Stiff,  provided a guided tour and demonstrated advanced steel fabrication techniques used across residential, commercial and industrial construction projects.

“Being able to take participants onsite is a terrific opportunity for them to see a local construction workplace firsthand and understand how steel fabrication skills are used during different phases of building homes, renovations, and commercial and industrial projects,” said co-organiser and RIST Accredited Trainer, Peter Rawle.

He added, “There’s been such a difference in these participants since the first day they started the short course. They have really blossomed and are enjoying the opportunity to develop their language, literacy, numeracy, employability and communication skills while creating a bag trolley from scratch.”

are-able Employment Mentor for the Transition to Work Program, Sally Harris said, “The industry visit reinforced the practical value of the course and helped participants connect their learning with future employment opportunities. This course is creating opportunities for participants to build confidence as they prepare for further study and employment. It gives them the chance to demonstrate their skills when speaking with employers and to develop a portfolio showcasing how they have applied problem-solving, communication, teamwork, planning, organisation and personal responsibility. Inviting participants onsite demonstrates where education and training can lead in a real-world setting.”

Jayden Stiff agreed the visit was an opportunity to inspire participants to consider careers in the industry. “It’s great to be able to share what a career in steel fabrication within the construction industry can look like and showcase the projects that can be achieved using high-quality materials, advanced fabrication techniques and the latest technology. During the visit, participants saw projects at various stages, including design, cutting and welding.”

RIST’s Introduction to Welding participants build a bag trolley from scratch and an accompanying portfolio to demonstrate their development and employability skills.
