Raelene’s career, spanning over 40 years, has been dedicated to supporting and shaping the future of wool production in Australia. Starting her journey in the wool industry at a young age, Raelene first worked alongside her grandfather from the Warrnambool district, VIC, where she developed a passion for wool production.
She has now been a registered Wool Classer for 38 years and a Master Wool Classer for 16 years, with a long-standing role as a Trainer at Rural Industries Skill Training (RIST) for 13 years. As a trainer, Raelene has played a vital role in shaping the next generation of wool professionals, equipping students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in wool production.
Raelene has worked across Australia, including in Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, and Queensland, and has expanded her influence internationally. In 2024, she was part of the Falkland Islands project, where she helped local wool growers standardise wool clip preparation and address unique challenges faced by the region.
Raelene has also represented Australia as a Wool Handling Judge at the Golden Shears competition in Masterton, New Zealand, and at the World Shearing and Wool Handling Championships in Le Dorat, France.
Alongside her extensive experience, Raelene has been deeply committed to leadership, offering her time and expertise to industry organisations for over 20 years. Her contributions extend to various committees, including her role as an Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) Wool Q Industry Advisor and her involvement in the AWI Wool Overview Program, which introduces high school students to careers in the wool industry. She has also spent many years advocating for ethical and sustainable wool harvesting practices through her involvement with Sports Shear Australia.
Raelene’s career is a testament to her unwavering passion for innovation, leadership, and mentoring. As a woman in a once male-dominated field, Raelene has become an inspiration for many, proving that women can excel in every area of wool production.
In accepting the Career Legacy Award, Raelene expressed her gratitude for the recognition ,“I’m incredibly honoured to receive the Career Legacy Award,” Raelene said. “The wool industry has been my life’s work, and I feel privileged to have played a role in its growth. I look forward to continuing to mentor the next generation and ensuring Australian wool remains a global leader.”
