Supporting Safer Farms: RIST Side-by-Side Training Builds Practical Skills and Confidence in SW Vic
The newly released Safer Farms 2025 report from Farm Safe Australia highlights a shift in farm machinery trends, with side-by-side vehicles (SSV’s) now involved in more on-farm incidents than any other equipment type in the past year.
While side-by-sides are often seen as a safer option thanks to their built-in safety features like seatbelts and roll-over protection, the report shows that how these vehicles are being used matters just as much as the technology itself.
In response, RIST is continuing to support the industry by offering practical, accessible training for SSV operators. The course is now available at both Hamilton and Terang campuses.
“We’re here to support farmers and their teams to build skills, confidence and safety awareness,” says RIST CEO Bill Hamill. “Training isn’t about highlighting what’s going wrong, it’s about helping and training people to do things well, and safely, every day.”
The course covers safe operation of side-by-sides, terrain awareness, loading practices, and basic maintenance. It’s designed for anyone working on the land, whether you’re just getting started or have years of experience. Mr Hamill says. “If we can help people strengthen their knowledge and safety practices, we’re proud to play that role.”
For eligible participants, training is government subsidised, with places available from just $100, making it an accessible step towards safer farm workplaces. Non subsidised training is $400 for the full one-day course.
