“Someone who inspires me in the agricultural industry is my family, especially my dad. His deep knowledge, gained from years of experience, and his wisdom in navigating various weather conditions never fail to impress me. He knows how to make the most of tough situations, saving products and money, while knowing when to invest in what’s truly needed. Farming is full of challenges, but every year, my dad faces them head-on and comes out on top. In the future, I hope my crops and sheep will thrive as well as his do

Aged 18, when Ben is not busy at school, he makes sure to get out on farm as much as possible. Residing on his family’s sheep and crop farm in Lake Bolac, he has been deeply connected to agriculture from a young age. Working alongside his father, managing tasks that range from sheep work to fencing and operating tractors. The diversity of the agricultural industry excites him, allowing him to apply his interests in practical ways. Ben enjoys the physical demands of farming, which keeps him active and engaged, and he relishes the variety of work that each day brings.

“I’m deeply connected to agriculture, living on my family’s sheep and crop farm in Lake Bolac. I work on the farm year-round every day when I’m not at school. I’m outside with the dogs, doing sheep work, fencing, on the excavator, or in the tractor. Farming is a big part of my life”.

His decision to pursue a Certificate III in Agriculture at RIST stemmed from his hands-on learning style and inspiration from his brother, Toby, who completed the same course in 2021.

“I enjoy the agriculture industry because it’s so diverse, offering a lot of variety in the work I can do. I’m able to follow my interests, like excavations and fencing, and apply them to the farm. Farming isn’t just about doing sheep work or sitting on a tractor—there are so many other tasks that require physical labour, which I actually enjoy. It helps keep things interesting and adds some variety to my day. The physical side of farming is something I appreciate, too, because it keeps me active, strong and fit. Plus, being younger, I can handle the workload without feeling too worn out by the end of the day”.

Through RIST, Ben has gained a deeper understanding of agricultural operations and earned valuable qualifications, which he feels equip him for future employment opportunities in the industry.

“I learn best by being hands on, and this was my practical subject to do alongside English, Maths, Business Management etc. Doing the Cert III has given me a deeper understanding of the thought processes and operations behind the work we do on the farm. Plus, it has provided me with multiple certificates, such as my ACUP License, ATV/UTV, welding certificates, which are really valuable for working with crops and livestock. Having both the Cert II and Cert III, along with these certifications, will also make it easier for me to find employment and apply the skills I’ve learned from RIST”.

Ben draws inspiration from his family, particularly his Dad, whose extensive knowledge and ability to navigate the challenges of farming serve as a guiding light. He admires how his dad maximizes resources and investments, ensuring their farm thrives despite tough conditions. Ben aspires to achieve the same success with his own crops and sheep.

Outside of his agricultural pursuits, Ben enjoys various hobbies, including welding and clay target shooting, and plays football while volunteering at the local footy club. His involvement in the community is a testament to his well-rounded character and commitment to teamwork.

Reflecting on his time at RIST, Ben highlights the relationships he’s built with trainers and classmates, as well as the specialized knowledge he’s gained from visiting experts. The supportive environment fosters learning and camaraderie, making his experience truly memorable.

“My time with RIST has been incredible. In addition to meeting new friends and bringing Jess, my dog, to dog school (where she’s already learning skills that are proving useful in the yards), one of the biggest highlights has been the trainers. They build such strong connections with the students, regardless of age, and really know how to communicate and get along with us. They’re always willing to help. They are fun, likeable, engaging, supportive and approachable. I’ve also really appreciated the external teachers who came in for a day to share their specialized knowledge. They explain things in a way that makes sense and is easy to grasp, often better than what you’d hear at a conference or in the field with an employer. I’ve learned so much from them”.

As Ben continues to embrace opportunities in agriculture, he sets an inspiring example for his peers. All the best for a bright future in Agriculture Ben, We can’t wait to see what you achieve!
