RIST is excited to present this week’s Wool Overview Program, where students from Hawkesdale College are set to gain hands-on experience in the diverse aspects of the wool industry. Guided by Raelene Laidlaw, an expert in wool classing, and wool handling, the program is designed to equip our participants with a broad range of practical skills essential to the wool sector.

During the three-day program, students will be immersed in a variety of activities that showcase the real-life applications of wool production. From the intricacies of shearing sheep to the detailed process of wool classing, the program offers a comprehensive look into the traditional practices that form the backbone of the industry.

Key activities include:

  • Shearing: Students will learn firsthand the techniques and skills involved in shearing, gaining an appreciation for this vital step in wool production.
  • Wool Handling and Classing: Through hands-on sessions, participants will discover how to handle and classify wool based on its quality, an essential skill for ensuring the integrity and value of wool products.
  • Safety Protocols: Emphasising the importance of safety, students will be introduced to best practices in wool sheds, ensuring a safe and productive working environment.
  • Sheep Husbandry and Farm Tours: Engaging with sheep on a farm setting provides a real-world context to the theory, where students can learn about the care, management, and breeding of sheep integral to wool production.

The Wool Overview Program is not just about imparting knowledge; it’s about providing a tangible experience that connects students with the roots of the wool industry. It’s an opportunity for prospective students to understand the depth and breadth of careers in agriculture and wool, through a hands-on approach that brings the journey of wool from farm to fabric to life.
